AIMS AND SCOPE

About the Journal

The Journal of Computation Science and Artificial Intelligence (JCSAI) is a peer-reviewed and open-access scholarly journal published by PT Berkah Digital Teknologi.

JCSAI publishes original and methodologically rigorous research in computation science, artificial intelligence, and applied computing. The journal provides a platform for researchers, academics, practitioners, and technology professionals to communicate findings that contribute to the development, evaluation, and responsible application of computational methods.

The journal prioritizes manuscripts that demonstrate:

  • a clearly defined research problem;

  • an identifiable scholarly or technological contribution;

  • an appropriate and transparent methodology;

  • reliable data and analysis;

  • comparison, validation, or systematic evaluation;

  • critical discussion of the findings;

  • relevance to computation science or artificial intelligence; and

  • implications for research, industry, public services, or society.

JCSAI does not prioritize manuscripts solely because they describe the development of software, websites, information systems, or mobile applications. Such manuscripts must also present a clear research contribution and adequate scientific evaluation.


Aim

JCSAI aims to advance knowledge and practice in computation science and artificial intelligence by publishing research that develops, evaluates, compares, or responsibly applies computational theories, methods, algorithms, models, systems, and technologies.

The journal seeks to:

  1. disseminate original research in artificial intelligence and computation science;

  2. encourage rigorous evaluation of algorithms, models, and intelligent systems;

  3. promote the responsible application of computational technologies;

  4. connect theoretical and methodological developments with real-world problems;

  5. support interdisciplinary research with a clear computational contribution;

  6. encourage reproducible and transparent computational research; and

  7. facilitate scholarly collaboration among researchers, institutions, industry, and public-sector organizations.


SCOPE OF THE JOURNAL

JCSAI focuses on four main subject areas.

1. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

This area covers the development, evaluation, comparison, and application of artificial intelligence and machine-learning approaches.

Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

  • supervised learning;

  • unsupervised learning;

  • semi-supervised learning;

  • reinforcement learning;

  • deep learning;

  • neural networks;

  • explainable artificial intelligence;

  • generative artificial intelligence;

  • responsible and trustworthy artificial intelligence;

  • evolutionary computation;

  • swarm intelligence;

  • fuzzy systems;

  • expert systems;

  • knowledge-based systems;

  • recommender systems;

  • decision-support systems;

  • predictive modeling;

  • pattern recognition;

  • optimization methods;

  • artificial-intelligence model evaluation;

  • algorithm comparison;

  • model interpretability;

  • artificial-intelligence ethics;

  • fairness, accountability, and transparency in artificial intelligence; and

  • artificial-intelligence applications with clear scientific evaluation.

Manuscripts in this area should not merely apply a standard algorithm. They should explain the research gap, justify the selected method, evaluate its performance, and compare the results with appropriate baselines or previous approaches whenever possible.


2. Data Science and Intelligent Information Systems

This area covers computational approaches for collecting, processing, analyzing, managing, and interpreting data, as well as the development and evaluation of intelligent information systems.

Relevant topics include:

  • data mining;

  • big-data analytics;

  • business intelligence;

  • predictive analytics;

  • data visualization;

  • database systems;

  • data engineering;

  • data warehousing;

  • information retrieval;

  • intelligent information systems;

  • decision analytics;

  • knowledge discovery;

  • knowledge graphs;

  • semantic technologies;

  • ontology development;

  • spatial and temporal data analysis;

  • social-media analytics;

  • web analytics;

  • time-series forecasting;

  • clustering and classification;

  • anomaly detection;

  • recommendation systems;

Information-system manuscripts must present more than a description of system development. They should include a research framework, systematic method, technical contribution, evaluation, validation, or evidence of system effectiveness.


3. Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Cybersecurity, and Automation

This area covers computational methods for interpreting visual and textual information, protecting digital systems, and supporting automated or autonomous processes.

Computer Vision

Relevant topics include:

  • image classification;

  • object detection;

  • image segmentation;

  • facial and biometric recognition;

  • medical-image analysis;

  • remote-sensing image analysis;

  • visual inspection;

  • image enhancement;

  • video analytics;

  • image retrieval;

  • computer-vision model evaluation; and

  • multimodal visual analysis.

Natural Language Processing

Relevant topics include:

  • text classification;

  • sentiment analysis;

  • information extraction;

  • topic modeling;

  • machine translation;

  • speech and text processing;

  • question-answering systems;

  • conversational systems;

  • text summarization;

  • language models;

  • Indonesian and local-language computing;

  • document analysis;

  • semantic analysis; and

  • natural-language-processing evaluation.

Cybersecurity

Relevant topics include:

  • network security;

  • information security;

  • cryptography;

  • malware analysis;

  • intrusion detection;

  • cyber-threat intelligence;

  • authentication;

  • digital forensics;

  • privacy protection;

  • secure software;

  • security-risk analysis;

  • vulnerability assessment;

  • responsible cybersecurity experimentation.

Cybersecurity manuscripts must report appropriate validation and must not unnecessarily expose individuals, organizations, systems, or infrastructure to risk.

Automation

Relevant topics include:

  • intelligent automation;

  • robotic-process automation;

  • autonomous systems;

  • Internet of Things;

  • smart monitoring;

  • embedded intelligent systems;

  • industrial automation;

  • sensor-based systems;

  • control and decision automation;

  • human–computer collaboration;

  • human–AI interaction; and

  • evaluation of automated systems.


4. Applied Computing for Industry and Society

This area covers the responsible application of computational approaches to real-world problems, provided that the manuscript presents a clear computational contribution and adequate scientific evaluation.

Application domains may include:

  • manufacturing;

  • business and commerce;

  • finance and financial technology;

  • education;

  • healthcare;

  • agriculture;

  • tourism;

  • transportation;

  • logistics and supply chains;

  • public administration;

  • smart cities;

  • environmental monitoring;

  • disaster management;

  • energy;

  • creative industries;

  • micro, small, and medium enterprises;

  • social services;

  • cultural and heritage applications;

  • community development; and

  • other fields in which computational methods provide a measurable contribution.

Applied-computing manuscripts should clearly explain:

  1. the practical or scientific problem;

  2. the computational method used;

  3. the reason for selecting the method;

  4. the dataset or source of evidence;

  5. the evaluation procedure;

  6. the performance or effectiveness indicators;

  7. the comparison or validation method;

  8. the contribution beyond routine implementation; and

  9. the limitations and implications of the findings.

Interdisciplinary manuscripts are welcome when computation science, artificial intelligence, data science, or intelligent systems form a central part of the research contribution rather than merely serving as supporting terminology.


TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS

JCSAI considers the following types of manuscripts.

Original Research Articles

Original research articles report new empirical, experimental, computational, methodological, or applied findings.

Such articles should contain:

  • a clear research gap;

  • research objectives or questions;

  • relevant literature;

  • an appropriate method;

  • transparent data or experimental procedures;

  • results;

  • critical discussion;

  • conclusions;

  • limitations; and

  • an identifiable contribution.

Review Articles

Review articles provide a structured and critical synthesis of literature within the journal’s scope.

Review manuscripts should use a transparent review method, such as:

  • systematic literature review;

  • scoping review;

  • bibliometric review;

  • meta-analysis;

  • structured critical review; or

  • another clearly justified review approach.

A review article should not merely summarize previous publications. It should identify patterns, gaps, debates, methodological limitations, and future research opportunities.

Methodological or Algorithmic Articles

These articles propose, improve, compare, or validate:

  • algorithms;

  • computational models;

  • analytical frameworks;

  • datasets;

  • software methods;

  • technical protocols; or

  • evaluation approaches.

The proposed contribution should be assessed using appropriate data, experiments, benchmarks, baselines, simulations, or comparative methods.

Application-Oriented Research Articles

These articles report the application of computational methods in organizational, industrial, governmental, educational, health, social, or community settings.

Application-oriented studies must still demonstrate:

  • a research problem;

  • methodological rigor;

  • measurable evaluation;

  • analytical discussion; and

  • a contribution beyond routine software development.


OUT OF SCOPE

JCSAI will normally not consider the following manuscripts.

1. Application development without scientific evaluation

Manuscripts that only describe:

  • the creation of an application;

  • system interfaces;

  • menus and screenshots;

  • database tables;

  • programming stages; or

  • general system functionality,

without systematic evaluation, validation, comparison, testing, or an identifiable scientific contribution are outside the journal’s scope.

2. Website-development descriptions

Manuscripts that only report the development of:

  • a company website;

  • an institutional website;

  • an online shop;

  • a school website;

  • a promotional website;

  • a basic information portal; or

  • a standard content-management system,

without a meaningful computational contribution and research evaluation are not suitable for JCSAI.

3. Routine algorithm implementation

Manuscripts that apply a commonly used algorithm without:

  • explaining the research gap;

  • justifying the algorithm;

  • using an adequate dataset;

  • reporting evaluation metrics;

  • comparing the algorithm with a baseline or alternative method;

  • analyzing the results; or

  • identifying a new contribution,

will normally be rejected during editorial screening.

4. Educational studies without computational contribution

Studies concerning:

  • student motivation;

  • learning satisfaction;

  • teaching methods;

  • curriculum;

  • teacher performance;

  • educational management; or

  • general technology acceptance,

are outside the journal’s scope unless they contain a substantive contribution in artificial intelligence, computation science, learning analytics, educational data mining, intelligent tutoring systems, or another relevant computational field.

Merely using an online questionnaire or discussing digital technology does not constitute a computational contribution.

5. Management studies without computational methods

General studies of:

  • marketing;

  • human-resource management;

  • organizational behavior;

  • leadership;

  • finance;

  • entrepreneurship;

  • consumer behavior; or

  • public administration,

are outside the journal’s scope when they do not develop, evaluate, or substantially apply computational models, artificial intelligence, data analytics, intelligent systems, or related technologies.

The inclusion of terms such as “digital,” “technology,” or “artificial intelligence” in the title is insufficient when the research itself does not contain an actual computational component.

6. Community-service reports without research design

Reports of community service, training, workshops, socialization activities, or technology assistance are outside the journal’s scope when they do not include:

  • a research design;

  • systematic data collection;

  • measurable evaluation;

  • analytical results;

  • a computational contribution; and

  • scholarly discussion.

Descriptions of activities, participant attendance, photographs, and general satisfaction alone are insufficient for publication as research articles.

7. Purely descriptive studies

Manuscripts that only describe a phenomenon, technology, institution, or system without:

  • analysis;

  • evaluation;

  • comparison;

  • validation;

  • theoretical contribution;

  • methodological contribution; or

  • meaningful interpretation,

will normally not be considered.

8. Unvalidated conceptual proposals

Conceptual frameworks, system designs, or proposed architectures that are not supported by:

  • systematic literature synthesis;

  • expert evaluation;

  • simulation;

  • prototype testing;

  • empirical validation; or

  • another credible assessment method,

may be considered insufficient for publication.

9. Manuscripts outside the disciplinary focus

Manuscripts whose principal contribution belongs to another field and in which computing or artificial intelligence is only incidental are outside the scope of JCSAI.

10. Unethical or potentially harmful research

JCSAI will not consider manuscripts that:

  • violate research ethics;

  • misuse personal or confidential data;

  • contain fabricated or falsified results;

  • facilitate unauthorized harmful access;

  • expose vulnerabilities without responsible disclosure;

  • promote discriminatory or harmful automated systems;

  • violate copyright or data-usage rights; or

  • present unacceptable risks to individuals, organizations, or society.


SCOPE ASSESSMENT

Before submission, authors should be able to answer “yes” to the following questions:

  1. Is the manuscript primarily related to computation science, artificial intelligence, data science, intelligent systems, cybersecurity, automation, or applied computing?

  2. Does the article identify a clear scientific or technological problem?

  3. Does it explain a research gap or unresolved issue?

  4. Does it contain an identifiable contribution?

  5. Is the selected computational method justified?

  6. Are the data, experiments, or research procedures explained?

  7. Are the results systematically evaluated?

  8. Is there an appropriate baseline, benchmark, validation, or comparison where relevant?

  9. Does the discussion interpret the findings rather than merely repeat them?

  10. Are the conclusions supported by the results?

  11. Does the manuscript explain its limitations?

  12. Does the study comply with research and publication ethics?

A manuscript that does not satisfy the journal’s scope and minimum scholarly requirements may be declined during initial editorial screening without external peer review.


EDITORIAL INTERPRETATION OF SCOPE

The list of topics on this page is illustrative rather than exhaustive. The Editor-in-Chief may consider other topics when the manuscript provides a clear and substantial contribution to computation science or artificial intelligence.

The use of software, digital platforms, statistical applications, online questionnaires, websites, or information systems does not automatically place a manuscript within the scope of JCSAI.

The editorial team evaluates the actual research problem, method, analysis, contribution, and findings rather than relying only on keywords appearing in the manuscript title.

Authors who are uncertain about scope suitability should compare their manuscripts with the aims, subject areas, article requirements, and out-of-scope criteria stated on this page before submission.
